US Open Preview

US Open Betting Preview

The US tennis Open kicks off today with a whole host of men’s and women’s first round singles starting from 17:00 (SA time). The US Open is the second major of the year to be played on a hard court and is the fourth and final major of the 2019 tennis season, preceded by the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. The current men’s single US Open champion is number one-ranked ,Serbian, Novak Djokovic while his women’s counterpart is the number one-ranked Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka. The 2018 doubles champions were Ashleigh Barty partnered by CoCo Vandeweghe (women) and the men are Mike Bryan/Jack Sock.

32-year old Djokovic won the first major of the year, the Australian Open, played on hard-court when he thrashed Rafael Nadal in straight sets in January. Djokovic was surprisingly knocked out of the French Open in the semi-finals by Dominic Thiem in a 5-set marathon. The Serb recovered from that disappointment by picking up his second major of the year when he pipped crowd favourite, Roger Federer, in a gruelling encounter to win Wimbledon. It comes as no surprise then that the ‘Djoker’ is the early favourite to lift his third major of the year at 5/4 with Nadal shortly behind him at 3/1. The number one seed will begin his tournament against world number 76 Roberto Carballes Baena (20/1). With Djokovic (1/100) the overwhelming favourite to breeze past the Spaniard, punters can find value in the Over-Under market for total games/ total sets. Other Djokovic markets are as follows:

Like her male counterpart, 21-year old Osaka won the Australian Open at the beginning of the year when she beat Petra Kvitová in 3 sets to add a second major titile to her burgeoning career. However she found a change of surface difficult as she was unceremoniously dumped out of the French Open, played on clay, in the third round by Czech Kateřina Siniaková. Things went from bad to worse for Osaka who crashed out of Wimbledon, played on grass, in the first round when Yulia Putintseva thumped her in straight sets. However she has fond memories of the US Open after she famously stunned tennis great Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the final of the 2018 tournament. This year she will kick-start her campaign against Russian Anna Blinkova on Tuesday. Osaka is the odds on favourite at 6/25 with Blinkova priced at a distant 16/5.

The marquee first round match-up in the women’s draw however, is between former winners Serena Williams (7/25) and Russian Maria Sharapova (11/4). The long-time rivals meet each other early doors on Tuesday (01:00 SA time) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Elsewhere in the women’s draw the eyes will be on the clash between Anastasia Potapova (6/5) and Cori Gauff (13/20). 15-year old Gauff grabbed headlines the world over when, after going through qualifying at Wimbledon, went on to stun five-time champion Venus Williams in the first round before losing to eventual winner Simona Halep in the fourth round. The American teenager Gauff, also known as Coco, is a wild card entry into US Open and will be looking to grab the headlines once more in just her second major.
