Australian Open 2022 -  Quarter Finals Preview

The Australian Open, currently being played at Melbourne Park, continues to provide upsets & intrigue with a consistent purge of top seeded players throughout the tournament so far. With both men’s & woman’s 2021 defending singles champions exiting from the tournament in unusual fashion, the quarter finals top spots are never a foregone conclusion.

Women’s Singles:

Women’s defending champion Naomi Osaka was surprisingly but convincingly beaten in the third round by unseeded American, Amanda Anisimova, to open up a path to the final for local tennis heroine and world No1, Ashleigh Barty who now faces world No21 Jessica Pegula in her Quarter Final Clash.

Other notable women’s players into the Quarter finals are:

• French 32-year old, Alize’ Cornet who caused a major upset beating Simona Halep in Round 4 and Spanish 3^rd seed Garbine Muguruza in the third to make it into her maiden grand slam quarter final. Cornet is playing the best tennis of her career but needs to get past a determined Danielle Collins of the USA who is at 1.35:1 for a win on SunBet.
• Polish Iga Swiatek secured her place in the quarters with a good win against a spirited Daria Kasatkina and will face-off against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in their Quarter final match. Swiatek, the world No9 would be my selection to make it to the finals to face off against Barty and is currently at 4.5:1 to clinch the Open Women’s title On SunBet
• World No 4, Chech Barbora Krejcikova who beat Victoria Azarenka convincingly 6-2, 6-2 in the 4^th round to secure her berth in the Quarters will face big hitting Maddie Keys, who thrashed 8^th seeded Paula Badosa for her Quarter final spot. This clash would be my tip for another major upset with current odds for Keys to win at 2.06:1 on SunBet

Mens Singles:

In the Men’s singles, with Djokovic prevented from playing, it is Daniel Medvedev the world No2 who is left as tournament favourite and he proved why he is ranked world No2 with a hard-fought win over Australian, court favourite, Nick Kyrgios in a most entertaining four-set match in round 3 and a determined Maxime Cressy in round four to secure his Quarter final spot.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev who won convincingly against Radu Albot in round 3 was completely outplayed by a power display by Canadian Denis Shapavalov in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. The tough World No14, who was a Wimbledon Semi-Finalist made a statement with his complete dominance and will be one to watch. At 15:1 to win on SunBet, he is a great value bet for a place in the final against Medvedev but will first have to get past Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who played some riveting tennis in round 4 where he beat Adrian Mannarino.
