Six Nations Rugby 2022 Preview

By Greg Stewart

The 2022 Guinness Six Nations kicks off this weekend (5th-6th February) and ends on 19th March.

The defending champions are Wales, who lost only a single match to France in the 2021 competition but will have to haul out a series of big wins to retain the series crown in the 2022 iteration.

Team Talk – Who has the gas in the tank to take the title?

The odds on favourites to lift the title this year are France. They will meet all their toughest competitors – England & Ireland on home soil where the singing French rugby fans are sure to give them added motivation. France has also seen off New Zealand in their last international series last November and while one might argue that the All Blacks are not the squad they once were, it was still a well-rounded performance from the French that saw the Kiwi’s head home with no trophy. France have an easy first round clash against Italy on Saturday 6th February and my betting tip is France to win by 21 points or more. Latest odds available on Sunbet

The one European rugby nation who seems to have it all going for them right now is Ireland. All four of their provinces are through to in the knockout stages of the European Champions Cup and their Test-level depth is off the charts. They beat New Zealand convincingly 29-20 in their Nov 2021 Test Match and thrashed Argentina 53-7 in their last international test.

Scotland: The addition of Rory Darge and Hamish Watson to the Scottish squad, has transformed the quality of the Scottish attack and if one looks at the tight-five forwards, it probably makes for one of the best squads Scotland have ever fielded in the Six Nations and they certainly have the potential to cause an upset in the tournament.
