Arsenal vs Tottenham

Arsenal v Tottenham Preview

Another English Premier League match day is around the corner and there’s yet another tantalising fixture as Arsenal host their fiercest rivals, Tottenham Hotspur in the famed North London Derby on Sunday.

Both teams go into the clash at the Emirates on the back of disappointing results. The Gunners were thoroughly dispatched by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, 3-1 at Anfield, while Spurs were inexplicably beaten by relegation candidates Newcastle United, 0-1 at home. The teams are physically separated by just 4 miles (6.4 km) and by a mere 2 points in the league table. Unai Emery’s team have 6 points from their opening three matches whereas Mauricio Pochettino’s men have returned 4 points from as many matches, with one win, one draw and one loss.

Tottenham’s stuttering start has coincided with speculation of a possible exit for their midfield maestro Christian Eriksen, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid before the end of the European transfer window deadline on 2 September. The Danish playmaker has been used as a substitute in two of the three games this season with manager Pochettino seemingly planning for life without the former Ajax man. On the other side of the coin are the hosts Arsenal, who had made a promising start to the season, seeing off Newcastle and Burnley before stumbling against Liverpool. They will be hoping their most recent loss was nothing more than a wobble. Sunday’s home team are the early, but slight, favourites at 11/8 with Tottenham priced at 19/10 to win.

In the Premier League last season, the Gunners were unbeaten against their arch-rivals, hammering them 4-2 at the Emirates before drawing, 1-1, at Wembley Stadium in March. Incidentally there was a red card issued and a penalty awarded in each of the matches. So if recent history is anything to go by then there will be goals and a high possibility of a red card. Punters can cash in with a ‘Both Teams To Score’ bet at 11/25 or a ‘red card to be given’ at 13/4. Four of the last five previous draws, dating back to 2014, have been by a 1-1 score-line and the same score on Sunday will yield a 6/1 dividend.

When it comes to goals one can’t stray too far from Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Both have netted twice already this season and were both on the scoresheet in last season’s encounters. Kane scored a penalty in each of the clashes while Aubameyang scored a brace in the first game. Punters can back the Gabonese international to score at any time for a return of 21/20 while Kane is priced at 6/5 to do the same. Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen and Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira were the recipients of the red cards last season. Vertonghen has yet to play this season with Argentine manager Pochettino preferring Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld as his centre-back partnership so far. However, diminutive combat midfielder Torreira came off the bench to score Arsenal’s consolation goal against Liverpool on Saturday and is priced at a generous 9/1 to score his second goal of the season.
